The Championship

The Border Collie is a specialist to collect scattered sheep from a distance or in ground, to fetch them in a calm and gentle manner, and especially for the so-called "sheep handling" - the precise driving, shedding and penning of small groups of sheep.

You won't find any dog breed with more capabilites for these jobs. Especially this mostly independent handling of sheep, the instinctive reaction on their behavior seem to be very intelligent to the observer. The absolute obedience to the precise commands of his human herding partner, even over long distances, are impressive and fascinating at the same time.

The Border Collie has his origines in the sheep dogs in the border contries between England and Scotland. A first description of his quiet, head-down and gentle working style has been written in 1570. In 1873 the sheep farmers organized a herding competition (a trial) for the first time. Since then the number and popularity of these competitions in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland have risen continuously, and the number of dogs as well to do these tasks.

The International Sheep Dog Society represents the interests of Border Collie breeders in Great Britain and encourages the breeding of well talented working dogs. The only thing that counts in the judgment of a dog is its quality in working stock.

On the continent the number of working Border Collies is growing, too, and with them the number of trials. The highlight of the continental sheepdog events is the Continental Sheepdog Championship each year. On the following pages you will find all important informations about this great competition.
